Bakin Kolač – Grandma’s Wafles

bakin kolac

Most people know it as Belgium waffle, but we know it as “Grandma’s cake’’ or Bakin Kolač! Actually it is considered to be a traditional cake and almost every family in the Balkans has one waffle iron!  Truth to be told, for years I thought that waffles were our (Balkan) invention (oh sweet ignorance), simply because this cake was something we were making quite often in the 90’s. The reason for that was the fact that this cake was cheap to make and it could be stored for days, so during the hard times, it was the best answer to the famous question ‘’Do we have something sweet at home?’’

One is for sure, waffles are great when you need something sweet – you can eat them with absolutely anything and you can make them very fast!

Here is the way to make them:

You will need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs

Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl. In other bowl whisk the milk, oil, and eggs together and gradually pour the mixture into the dry mixture (first bowl). Stir until blended. Heat the waffle iron and pour small portion of mixture. Cook until the waffle is crisp and golden brown

*With what do you like to eat Bakin Kolač the most?
